Oval Diamonds: The Number-One Fancy Shape, the Full Range We Supply, and Why the Bow-Tie Decides It

Where the Oval Sits in 2026

The oval is the runaway leader among fancy shapes — together with round it accounts for the large majority of the market, driven by celebrity ovals and the broad move toward elongated, finger-flattering silhouettes. US demand is exceptionally strong for well-cut elongated ovals, commanding a modest premium over pear. A well-proportioned oval faces up close to a size larger than its carat weight. Demand concentrates around a 1.35 to 1.50 ratio and on stones that mitigate the bow-tie — well-cut ovals in that window hold value; poorly-cut ones languish. The oval is also one of the premier coloured-diamond shapes, alongside cushion and radiant.

What GIA’s Report Covers — and the 2027 Cut Grade

GIA issues no cut grade for oval today — polish, symmetry, measurements, depth, and table only. Oval is in the first wave of incoming fancy-shape cut grades, arriving with pear and marquise from 2027, which will set a floor filtering the worst-cut stones. It won’t replace evaluation of bow-tie, wing symmetry, and outline. Physical evaluation remains the only reliable read through 2026 and beyond.

What Actually Matters When You’re Buying an Oval

The bow-tie — the decisive factor. Dynamic and integrated into the sparkle, or static and a dead shadow across the face — a call the report can’t make. Wing symmetry — evenly shaped sides; asymmetry throws the outline off and often worsens the bow-tie. Outline and ratio — 1.35 to 1.50 is the most demanded window, smooth ends with no shoulders or points. Depth and windowing — too shallow windows at the centre; too deep darkens and faces up smaller than its weight. Colour — ovals can show colour at the ends in white goods, and in colour stones, how evenly the cut carries the hue is central to evaluation.

Certified Single Stones

For solitaires and centrepieces, we supply GIA-certified natural ovals across sizes, colours, clarities, and ratios — evaluated in hand for bow-tie, wings, and proportion, in both white and colour.

Loose Parcels and Calibrated Goods

CategoryRange We Supply
Small/melee goodsCalibrated small oval goods through melee
Pointers18 to 99 points (0.18–0.99 ct)

ClarityFL to I1
ColourD to Z

Consistent make and outline through the parcel, calibrated face-up dimension where a layout needs it.

Matched Pairs

Matching bow-tie character, wing symmetry, outline, face-up size, colour, and fluorescence across two stones at once. A clean dynamic bow-tie beside a fixed shadow reads as mismatched the moment both are set. Fluorescence is the usual failure point. We match every pair in person before confirming.

Shades and Coloured Diamonds

TTLB and other light-brown shade goods often face up well, especially in yellow gold, at a real discount to D-Z stones. More central to this shape: natural coloured-diamond ovals, where the faceting carries colour strongly — a primary reason so many yellows are cut as ovals.

Pricing

Oval trades a little below round per carat and a touch above pear. The spread runs on cut — bow-tie, wings, outline — and for colour, on how well the stone carries its hue. We price against current market conditions and tell you plainly when a low number reflects a bow-tie or outline problem you’ll see in the stone.

FAQ

What is a bow-tie and why does it matter so much in an oval?

A dark shape across the centre from light escaping through the pavilion. Every oval has one — the question is dynamic and alive, or static and a dead shadow. Not visible on the certificate.

What ratio is best for an oval?

Roughly 1.35 to 1.50 — clearly elongated but balanced. Well-cut stones in that window hold value best.

Does GIA grade oval cut?

Not yet — confirmed coming with pear and marquise from 2027. Bow-tie, wings, and outline still need reading in hand until then.

Why are so many coloured diamonds cut as ovals?

The oval’s faceting carries body colour beautifully — yellows especially — making it one of the premier coloured-diamond shapes alongside cushion and radiant.

What sizes do you supply?

The full range — calibrated small goods through melee, pointers 0.18 to 0.99ct, and certified or non-certified parcels at a carat and up across FL-I1 and D-Z, plus shade goods and a deep coloured-diamond offering.

Do you supply matched pairs and layouts?

Yes — single stones, matched pairs, and layouts, matched on bow-tie character, wing symmetry, outline, colour, and fluorescence simultaneously before confirmation.
